The Riverfront Apartments, steeped in the rich history of Jefferson, once housed the pioneering Copeland – Ryder Co., a renowned shoe manufacturing enterprise dating back to 1868. Constructed in phases starting from 1885, this venerable establishment stood as one of the first shoe factories in the Midwest, boasting a legacy of crafting high-quality footwear for over a century until its closure in 1977.

In 1988, the building underwent a remarkable transformation into apartments, undergoing a comprehensive interior overhaul featuring brand-new electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems. While the interior now exudes modernity, with updated amenities and furnishings, echoes of its storied past linger in the form of exposed brick walls and hardwood flooring adorning many of the apartments.

The architectural integrity of the exterior posed a challenge, inspiring the architect to infuse each apartment with distinctive character. As a result, every floor plan is uniquely crafted, incorporating innovative elements reminiscent of contemporary residential design, such as angled walls and sunken or raised rooms. These features seamlessly blend the allure of historic architecture with the comforts of modern living.

Recognizing its significance, the building earned a well-deserved place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, preserving its heritage for generations to come.
